One Card From Elimination: The River Queen That Changed Mike Takayama’s Tournament

There was a moment during the APPT Manila 2026 Main Event when Mike Takayama appeared to be one card away from elimination.

It came at the final table against Taiwan’s Yang Yung Mao.

Takayama held pocket queens while Mao had ace-king. Takayama four-bet to 3 million after Mao three-bet from the big blind, and Mao responded by moving all in.

Takayama eventually called for his remaining 6.68 million chips.

The flop kept Takayama ahead.

Then came the turn.

A king appeared.

Suddenly, Mao had taken the lead and Takayama was facing elimination from the biggest APPT Manila Main Event in history.

There was only one card left in the deck that could save him.

One queen remained.

And it came on the river.

Takayama jumped from his chair as his supporters erupted around the final table. The hand completely changed the tournament, moving him into the chip lead while leaving Mao severely short.

Mao was eliminated shortly afterward in fifth place for ₱4,120,000.

The hand became the turning point of Takayama’s championship run.

The Filipino star later described his reaction as being in shock after the river queen appeared.

From there, Takayama continued to build his stack while maintaining the patient approach he had used throughout the final table.

He explained that with Campomanes and Seunghyuk Jung sitting to his left, he had chosen to preserve his stack rather than force unnecessary confrontations. His plan was to become more aggressive once the final table became shorter-handed.

That plan worked.

The river queen gave him the breakthrough he needed.

Several hours later, Takayama was holding the APPT Shard Trophy.
